Abstract

The quality of life of the population depends on socio-demographic, economic, political and environmental factors. Unfavourable climatic conditions have a special influence on the quality of life of northerners. This research is the first attempt to use the SF-36 survey to compare the quality of life of the adult able-bodied male population of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug (KMAO) – Yugra with that of residents of other constituent entities of the Russian Federation. The paper studied the quality of life of drivers working at oil and gas enterprises of Surgut and the Surgut district of the KMAO – Yugra, using the Russian-language standardized version of SF-36. We interviewed 242 men aged between 20 and 59 years. The scores were calculated according to 7 scales: physical functioning, role activities, general health, vitality, social functioning, emotional state, and mental health. The results were compared with the corresponding data for the working male population in other regions of Russia. The assessment of the quality of life of drivers employed by oil and gas companies of Surgut showed a high level of indicators on all scales of the questionnaire; their quality of life turned out to be higher than that of residents of other regions. Thus, the study provided us with information about the degree of physical, psychological and social well-being of drivers working in the oil and gas industry of Surgut and the Surgut district, allowing us to evaluate the effectiveness of various medical, social and economic programmes aimed to improve the quality of life of this category of the population. The obtained data can be used to analyse the quality of life indicators of the able-bodied population of the city of Surgut in dynamics and compare the quality of life indicators of the able-bodied male population of the KMAO – Yugra with other regions of the Russian Federation.
